Romanias currency is Leu/Lei.
Banknote denominations: 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 lei
Coins: 1, 5, 10 and 50 bani pieces.

The official exchange rates are given by the National Bank of Romania. Foreign currencies may be exchanged at banks and authorized exchange offices ("casa de schimb" or "birou de schimb valutar"). On international airports, in larger hotels you can find currency exchange services.
Never change your money on the streets!
ATM SERVICES
ATM machines are available at main banks, at the airports and in some shopping centers. Do not expect to find ATMs in remote areas or villages.
CREDIT CARDS
Major credit cards like American Express, Mastercard and Visa are accepted in large hotels, car rental companies and stores in the main cities. However, credit cards are unlikely to prove useful in small towns or away from tourist areas. In the little shops it is not possible to pay with your credit cards so it is better to always have cash in your pocket.

In Romania there are many international banks. Their head-offices are in the capital of the country, branches are more frequently in towns less than rural areas.
